What is You Can!?

You Can! started with a note from my mom — who I call Coach.

I was going through a difficult stretch in my career. Something I had done my whole life — throwing a baseball — suddenly didn’t feel as easy as it once did.

One morning before I left for the field, she left two words on a sticky note on my bathroom mirror:

The original sticky note from Jamie's mom: You Can! Love, Mom
The original note

I kept that note. I eventually tattooed those exact words on my wrist in her handwriting.

Years later, my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. The words she had given me during one of the hardest times in my life suddenly came full circle.

This time, I got to remind her:

‘You can, Coach. You absolutely will.’

She beat cancer.

You Can! means more to me than believing everything is going to work out exactly how you want it to.

It means believing that whatever happens next — success, failure, fear, disappointment, uncertainty — you can handle it. You can learn from it. And you can keep moving.

That’s what You Can! means to me. And that’s what I want every athlete I work with to find within themselves.
